Former Prime Minister Stanislav Gross announced that he plans to hold a referendum on the Constitution in June 2006, to coincide with the legislative elections. It was already his predecessor Vladimir Spidla who called for a referendum.

about NO campaign
The eurosceptic Czech President Vaclav Klaus has already stated, that he is against the EU constitution. He even did not sign the constitution. Instead the document was signed by Prime Minister Stanislav Gross.

By refusing to put his signature to the document, President Klaus has left the government in an extremely weak position: persuading the people to vote for something their own president won't sign.

In addition, Czech Republic’s social liberal government has suffered a defeat in the local elections and the first round of senat elections in November 2004. Clear winner is the opposition of conservatives (ODS) and communists (KSCM), which are regarded as EU critics and oppose the EU Constitution.
